Do you know exactly which part of a client’s
hand or foot you’re allowed to work on? What about the use of metal
instruments to remove a callus? Here we take a look at what the accepted
practices are for each state.

Area licensed to work on: The practice of manicuring,
pedicuring, nail care or adding wraps, tips, artificial or sculptured extensions
to the nails of any person or cutting, trimming, polishing, coloring, tinting,
cleansing or manicuring the nails of any person or massaging, cleansing,
treating, or beautifying the hands or feet of any person.

State: Alaska
License required: Manicurist, (Advanced Manicurist as of Sept. 1,
2001)
Area licensed to work on: Cut, trim, polish, color, tint, or
cleanse a natural or artificial nail; affix material by artificial means to a
natural nail for the addition to or extension of the natural nail; cleanse,
treat, or beautify the hands or feet for cosmetic purposes; or otherwise treat
the nails of the hand or foot.

State: Arizona
License required: Nail Technician
Area licensed to work on: cutting, trimming, polishing,
coloring, tinting, cleansing or otherwise treating a person’s nails; applying
artificial nails; massaging and cleansing a person’s hands, arms, legs, and
feet.

State: Arkansas
License required: Manicurist
Area licensed to work on: Cutting, trimming, polishing,
coloring, tinting, cleansing, filing, buffing, pushing, extending, protecting,
wrapping, covering, building, or beautifying the nails or performing any other
similar work upon the nails of any person by any means, including the softening
of the arms, hands, feet or ankles of any person by use of hands, mechanical or
electrical apparatus or appliances, cosmetic or chemical preparations,
antiseptics, lotions, or creams or by massaging, cleansing, manipulating or
stimulating the arms, hands, feet or ankles of any person.

Area licensed to work on: Cutting, trimming, polishing,
tinting, coloring, cleansing, or manicuring the nails of any person. Massaging,
cleansing, treating, or beautifying the hands or feet of any person.
Cutting: Prohibits the use (or even the presence within an
establishment) of any razor-edged or other device or tool designed to remove
calluses. Additionally, when providing a manicure or pedicure, no metal
instrument shall be used except those necessary for the cutting, trimming,
manicuring, or pedicuring of nails or cuticles.

Area licensed to work on: Filing, buffing, polishing,
cleansing, extending, protecting, wrapping, covering, building, pushing, or
trimming of nails including the softening of the hands, arms, ankles, or feet of
any person by use of hands, mechanical or electrical apparatus or appliances,
cosmetic or chemical preparations, antiseptics, lotions, or creams or by
massaging, cleansing, stimulating, manipulation, or exercising the arms, hands,
feet, or ankles of any person.
Cutting: Nippers may be used to trim cuticles and pumice for
calluses; does not allow for credo blades to remove calluses.

Area licensed to work on: Cuts, shapes, polishes or enhances
the appearance of the nails of the hands or feet; the application and removal of
sculptured or artificial nails.

Area licensed to work on: Trims, files, shapes, decorates,
applies sculptured or otherwise artificial nails, or in any way cares for the
nails of another person.

coloring, cleansing, or otherwise treating a person’s fingernails and toenails;
applying artificial fingernails and toenails; and massaging and cleansing a

Area licensed to work on: Manicuring, pedicuring the nails, and
the application of all forms of artificial nails; massage of the hands and feet.

nails, applies sculptured or otherwise artificial nails by hand or with
mechanical or electrical apparatus or appliances, or in any way cares for the

Area licensed to work on: Cleansing, dressing, polishing,
sculpting, tipping, or wrapping the nails of a person.

extensions, wraps, overlays, nail art, or any other nail technique to the
fingernails and toenails of a person; massaging the hands, arms, ankles, and
feet of a person; removing superfluous hair from hands, arms, feet, or legs of a
person by the use of wax or a tweezer.

State: Kansas
License required: Manicurist, Esthetician
Area licensed to work on: Manicuring, pedicuring or sculpturing
nails or performing any other beautifying process on any person.
Cutting: Prohibited in the working area of an establishment or
school: devices, tools, or instruments to remove calluses or skin blemishes.

shaping, or adjusting artificial nails using acrylic, resin, fabric, or gel
application systems, sanitizing of the nail bed by brushing on or spraying
material in preparation for attaching, fitting, shaping, or adjusting artificial
nails, cutting, filing, buffing, shaping, trimming, polishing, coloring,
tinting, cleansing, reshaping, or other cosmetic acts on the nails of a person,
the ability to detect infection, fungus, or nail disorders that contraindicate
the application of artificial nails and cleansing, stimulating, manipulating,
exercising, or similar acts on the hands or feet of any person.
Cutting: Nail technology does not include cutting nail beds,
corns, or calluses or medical treatment involving the feet, hands, or nails.

Area licensed to work on: Care of another’s fingernails or
toenails, beautification of another’s nails, extension of another’s nails,
massaging of another’s hands, forearms, feet or lower legs.
Cutting: Use of a credo blade is allowed for the removal of dead
skin only.

cleanse the nails of any person.

arms, legs or abdomen by the use of delipatories, waxing or tweezing.

comparable instrument, which might be used on calluses.

nails of a person and applies nail extensions or products to the nails for the

use any technique involving mechanical penetration of the skin beneath a callus
or corn.

does include the removal of thin, dry skin for cosmetic purposes with a pumice
stone or similar nonmetal instrument.
